Great article Danny! TisBest's gift cards are a great option, but I also wanted to mention a charity gift card that allows you to give to any charity in the country even your local to your town: JustGive.org. The GiveNow card allows you to choose any of the around 1.5 million nonprofits in the country and give back in style.

You can find JustGive.org's version here: https://www.justgive.org/give-now/gift-cards/index.jsp

Happy Holidays!

Hello Danny,
Great article. Really enjoyed the format and style. At Fox Rent A Car Blog we agree with all those great tips. It is important to keep our green habits during the holidays and adopt new ones! That's why we also wrote a blog presenting various ways to go green during Christmas.
Thanks again for sharing those tips!

I SO agree with choosing a real tree over an artificial tree for all of the reasons stated by Sara and Erin. Tree farms play a big role in keeping more land from becoming developed housing sites. As a resident of CT, I am a huge supporter of land conservation, because more and more of our farmland is being sold everyday.!

I'm with Erin on this. From what I've read, because I've tried to figure out if it's better to go with fake or real and no one seems able to give me a good answer, it seems that Christmas trees come from farms in the U.S. dedicated to growing Christmas trees. The land would otherwise go to waste. It's not like the grocery store Christmas tree came from wild forests of endangered evergreens. And many cities now recycle the trees and sell the resulting product as mulch at hardware stores. So, basically, buying a real tree means:

1. You're not buying yet another crappy petroleum product from China that had to travel thousands of miles to get here and will stay in a landfill forever.

2. You're supporting a U.S. farmer.

3. You're supporting your local economy, if it recycles and resells the mulch.

4. If your city doesn't recycle, you can easily cut the branches, use those as a mulch or compost, and cut the rest for firewood or a border in the yard. It's reusable.

Real tree wins.

Thanks for the props about TisBest Philanthropy's charity gift cards, Danny. (www.TisBest.org)! It's really thrilling seeing people get excited about buying a meaningful gift that's about more than just "more stuff." Our email cards are as eco-friendly as you can get. Even our plastic charity gift cards are made from 100% post consumer recycled material. This year, give the gift of giving!

wow, i am really surprised that you would advocate buying an artificial tree. even if you use it for 30 years, it will sit in a landfill for 1000 more. not to mention it's a petroleum product with an eco unfriendly production process, and most artificial trees are made overseas then shipped thousands of miles to north america.
