Dorm Room Before & After

cosmobefore

Today, I’m in New York City with Campbell’s Soup helping to plant a community garden, so I’m keeping this post short since it’s gonna be a LONG day.   But since I’m with a group of kids today, I thought it was perfect to give tips on detoxing a dorm room, or a kid’s room to be a healthier, greener, better place to sleep.

Way back in the day, I did a dorm room makeover for Cosmogirl magazine, way back in the day before they folded.   And just a day ago, I found a before and after digital photo shot that I thought would be fun to post on this blog.   Pretty bland, right?

And here’s the after:

  • Stacked  books together with belts to make a small side table.
  • Filled a bean bag chair cover with styrofoam packing peanuts that we all have in boxes around the house.  Great way to recycle ‘em.
  • Filled shoes with newspaper to detox them; newspaper absorbs moisture, so it deodorizes shoes!
  • Covered the mattress with an encasement cover to keep dust mites out; same for pillows.   Dressed the whole bed with organic cotton bedding!
  • Covered the wall in giant paint swatches from Yolo Color House.  It’s like paint chips on steroids.
  • And laid down some modular carpeting from Interface Flor.   It’s washable and recyclable.

I’ll be posting about my gardening day today in a few days.  After the Campbell’s event, I’m down in Texas to work with JCPenney.   Whirlwind…but all fun!

More soon!

    i love FLOR products!
it’s such a great idea — if one square is completely ruined, you can replace it without replacing the entire rug/carpet! plus, you have the option to design your own pattern, etc. LOVE IT! :)

    and love the room!
i wish my old dorm room had that much sunlight shining through! :’( haha!
