Store Visit: Paula Rubenstein

Running down Prince Street in Soho a few week back, this driftwood floor lamp stopped in my tracks. Not because I loved the lamp (I do). Not because it’s a very peculiar and unusual piece (It is). Because I swear it was the lamp I almost bought for $150, passed on it, went back to buy it, and it was gone.
Paula Rubenstein is a fantastic store frequently shopped by interior designs, prop stylists, and people who have an eye for the weird, the worn, the vintage and antiques. When I was an editor at the now-defunct Country Home magazine, I’ve pulled many pieces from here and used them for shoots. So, today, Paula let me snap a few pics of things I found to share with you.

If you read Daily Danny often, you know I’m a tad obsessed with grouping things together by their material or color. And this is just another great case in point: vintage glass jars and bottles all grouped together on an aged zinc shelf. Inexpensive and easy to do at home.

This silver lamp was something I considered buying for the guest cottage at the house. I’d match it with a beat up hand woven wicker shade so the juxtaposition of elegant silver metal would contrast with the worn-country look of the shade. Ying and Yang I supposed or Wabi-Sabi or WHATEVER. I didn’t get it… (and how funny how you can see me snapping a pic in the reflection!)

Large glass vessel repurposed into a lamp….

A handmade chair, perhaps sourced from upstate NY. Not my style, but would be great for a weekend cottage or as a bathroom chair to throw some towels on.

An oversized ball of twine mixed with vintage sporting equipment. Okay, I wouldn’t buy this in a shop. But it’s great prop styling and keeps things interesting. I’ve seen ginormous balls of twine at Lowe’s Home Improvement and thought about filling a bowl with different types of hardware store string. Paula, thanks for giving me the greenlight on this idea!

We visited NYC last year, and this shop was on my to do list. Oh my – I loved it, and still yearn for an oversized cloth tape measure that was there.
