Upcoming Auction Finds

This upcoming Friday and Saturday, Rago Arts is having their twice-a-year Discovery Auction where everything is sold “As-is, where-is” and there is no reserve on any single item.  In other words, you don’t know what you’re gonna find, it could go for a dollar, and you’ve got to haul it away yourself if you’re the winning bid.    That said, rarely do things go for a buck and there’s definitely more treasure than trash here.    I went to a preview the other day and took some snapshots of items I’m eyeing.

First up, this vintage dining rom table, a Stickley reproduction that’s 63″ in diameter.   If this piece goes for well under the price of the Restoration Hardware table I’m eyeing, I’ll snag it.   It all depends on what the interest level will be.   So easy to get caught in an auction frenzy and overpay for things… this time around, I shall restrain myself.

I’ve been looking for a heavy, tarnished, LARGE silverplated tray for an upcyling project idea.  I want to turn it into a top for a small side table by mixing it with weathered wooden legs.   It’s something I saw in the BoatHouse bar in Lambertville, NJ a few months ago and have been dying to re-create.    If this goes for less than $50, I’ll be all over it.

Art, art and more art.   Never buy pre-framed art at the store when auction houses are brimming with fantastic real pieces at a fraction of the price.   Okay, fraction might be the understatement of the day because I have no idea what this lovely piece will go for,  but I do know this: I want it.

It’s a piece by Barry Ratoff called “Circle Drawing #6 and #7.”

This photo does not do these chairs any justice.  They have an old, white-washed, almost beachy look to them.  They are stunning and very sturdy in person.    I need more chairs in my house like I need rabies, but for anyone who needs a set of one-of-a-kind dining room chairs and has a home with modern country flair, GET THESE.   It’s lot 582.

I’ll be there for some of the time on Friday and Saturday.    If you see me, say hi…just don’t outbid me.

Love the table! I think your chances of getting it for a deal are pretty good since it doesn’t have matching chairs. Good luck and can’t wait to see what you win.

OMG, grab the quilt in the corner of the last photo! Nothing says home like an old quilt, don’t let grime fool you, they are easy to wash in the bathtub or use hand wash on your washer. That is the best recycling, taking something someone lovingly made, and using it, even cut it up for pillow covers, or a tea cozy, oven mitts, framing motifs from the quilt can be so beautiful. Grab it Danny.
